A Visit to Nanjichang Lohas Garden: Seeing How a Food Bank Works

· Zhongzheng District, Taipei City

On 6 December 2023, our association was honoured to be invited by food bank President Fang Ho-sheng to visit Nanjichang Lohas Garden in Taipei City for a study visit. President Liu Chun-sheng, Secretary-General Lin Yun-chi and Standing Supervisor Cheng Yen-lung attended together.

Nanjichang Lohas Garden is a leading example of a community-based food bank in Taiwan. The corridor is hung with decorations, and a reminder on the wall reads “No talking while serving food”; older residents sit around tables in the shared dining area, while donated supplies are carried in and out by a dedicated vehicle. The whole set of practices runs within one and the same community.

The association made this visit to learn more about different approaches to social welfare work, and in particular about the process of collecting and distributing resources. We gained a great deal from what we saw. “Share resources, waste no food” has also become a reference point for the association when planning activities since.

In the future, the association will continue to work to help more groups and families in need.
